The official heat lists are in for Tampa Am 2008, with Qualifiers getting underway today. Yesterday I went through an earlier list of confirmed riders, gazed into the crystal ball, and picked some of the groms most likely to go big. Check my other Tampa Am preview posts here and here, and be sure to catch the live webcast on Sunday at 411vm.com
Flipping through the heat lists, here are some more names to watch for:
Ben Hatchell, 17, a rad vert/bowl/street/all-around skater I know from the old Vans Skatepark in Virginia (RIP). Hatchell won the Free Flow Tour vert contest (and took 4th in the street contest) this summer, and also won the amateur vert contest at X Games 13.
Evan Smith, 16, is a Florida local from Orlando who took 9th at Volcom Damn Am in 2007 and 5th at last year's Tampa Am. I watched him win a locals-only contest on the Dew Tour course in Orlando last summer
Birdhouse am John Dickson, winner of the Amsterdamn Am 2007.
Dylan Perry, 19, winner of the Best Trick contest at Amsterdamn Am.
Lacey Baker, 16, a young lady from the Element am squad. She took 3rd at the Women's Street Finals at X Games two years ago, but would just assume skate against the guys in a format like Tampa Am.
Chris Mendes, 19, a Banquet favorite from the Free Flow Tour. Mendes won the Best Trick contest at Volcom Damn Am, and took 3rd at the DC King of LA contest. Check out BNQT's video feature on him here:
Free Flow Tour winner Chaz Ortiz, 13. In 2007 Ortiz also took 2nd at Volcom Damn Am in 2007 and 4th at the 3rd Lair Damn Am event. Check out BNQT's video feature on him here:
Taylor Smith, 13, is another BNQT favorite from the Free Flow Tour. He took 5th at 3rd Lair's Damn Am event in 2007.
Luan De Oliveira, 17, the skater from Brazil who won the Etnies GvR contest in 2007. He also took 3rd at Volcom Damn Am, which guarantees him a spot in Semi-Finals at Tampa Am.
There are tons more – nearly 200 more, to be exact – but I'll leave it at that for now. Full reports after Quaifiers tomorrow.
