Interesting article in the Hartford Courant "Taking the Kids" section this week: Travel writer Eileen Ogintz reports from the 11-week Skate Cayman program at Black Pearl Skatepark in the Cayman Islands, where Shaun White just wrapped up his one-week residency. Check out the full article here: Taking The Kids And Meeting Up With Shaun White At Skateboard Camp In The Cayman Islands
From the Skate Cayman website:
Part of Cayman Summer Splash, Skate Cayman is the first destination skateboarding camp of its kind in the Caribbean and features expert coaches, your favorite pro skaters, and the second largest skatepark in the world!
From June 8 – August 21, some of the biggest names in the skateboarding game including Shaun White, Rune Glifberg, Bucky Lasek, Greg Lutzka, and more will be shredding Black Pearl offering trick tips and demos to campers who want to take their skating to the next level. You can enroll for week or day sessions where expert coaches will guide you through the 60,000+ square feet of features that include a full concrete street course, pipes, quarters, pools and bowls and even an over vert section. Camp runs from 9:30am – 3:00pm, leaving plenty of time to take in the rest that the Cayman Islands have to offer in the afternoon. From skateboarding Black Pearl in the morning to Turtle Farms and swimming with stingrays in the afternoon there is plenty for the entire family to do during Cayman Summer Splash.
It looks like it's being billed as a way for parents to dump their kids for the day so the adults can sip poolside pina coladas. If you're a kid reading this and trying to get to an exotic skate camp with some first rate instruction, I'd suggest working that angle to the fullest. You just might be on your way to a Skatecation this summer if you play your cards right.
Shaun White ran Week 1 (see photo above, via the Skate Cayman site), the am squad from Mesh Skatepark in Florida held it down in week two, wrapping up today, and Bucky Lasek's on the schedule for next week.
Week 4 features Greg Lutzka, and it looks like the list of skaters in on what must be one of the best gigs in pro skateboarding also includes Aaron Astorga, Dyson Ramones, Bruno Passos, Kristian Svitek, Chad Knight, Ben Raybourn, Chris Cole, Billy Marks, Louis Tolentino, Javier Nunez, Todd Jordan, Josh Harmony, Brian Sumner, Duane Peters, Tosh Townend, Barry Marion, Jake Reuter, and Rune Glifberg.
A week-long skate residency in the Cayman Islands? That's good work if you can get it.
