We interrupt our previously scheduled coverage from the LG Action Sports Championships to instead bring you this rad clip of Ron Allen skating at some park, courtesy of Satori and with thanks to SkateDaily.net for the heads up. Why? Because when I was a little whippersnapper and went to see an H-Street demo with Ron Allen and Matt Hensley, and then got to skate with them for a good long while afterwards, it changed my life. Okay? There isn't really anything in this clip Ron Allen wasn't already doing back then (then again, I still can't do much of anything I couldn't do back then either), but it's still awesome to see he's still got it, especially since he was 15 or 20 years ahead of his time as it was.
I ran into both Ron Allen and Matt Hensley this summer at ASR in San Diego, and even though it's basically my job to talk to pro skateboarders, I totally went all fanboy on both of them.
Anyway... back to LG. Remember earlier when I told you to put money on a Brazilian sweep? Well, I'm still holding my line for the street contest but if it's not too late to cancel your bets in vert, then let me inform you that Sandro Dias didn't make the cut. Dammit, Sandro, I was pulling for you! After his fall in Run 1 of Prelims, he climbed back up and tried to toss a 900 for good measure -- pretty sure he's still the only dude to ever land one in competition. He actually landed on the board before sliding out to his back... so close.
Is it possible I haven't even seen a 900 attempt in two years of covering the big pro vert contests? Hmmm... Shaun White tried that 1080 a bunch of times last year, and come to think of it Bob Burnquist was trying some 900s one time in San Jose last year on a broken toe and a prayer and not coming any closer than White was on that 1080. So, yeah... don't bet on Sandro (he fell again in Run 2), or that longshot Rodrigo Menenzes I picked, or Lincoln Ueda for that matter. They're all out. My hopes of a Brazilian vert sweep are DOA. You could still bet on Bob Burnquist, but I wouldn't: PLG is going to crush all except maybe Bucky Lasek or new kid Alex Perelson, because the ramp here is just ENORMOUS. If Shaun White had bothered to come, he might have had a better chance of getting that 1080 than ever before, because dudes are positively FLYING on this thing. Andy Mac was ripping too, and I was stoked to see Adam Taylor make the cut. Fun contest. More later.
