I'm not sure why I'm so fascinated with the stats reports SkateparkOfTampa.com makes public from time to time, but I am. At the very least, it's a relatively objective gauge of which skaters some subsection of real skateboarders care about and which skaters made news in a given month, and so it's comforting to see that Rodney Mullen keeps coming out on top and, thus, things are mostly right with the world.
Here's a breakdown of the top ten most-clicked SPoT skaters' pages from May 25-June 25. My one-liner notes are in italics:
1. Rodney Mullen (5454) No contests, no new video parts, no MTV, not much new at all, but the Mutt still gets the love he deserves. I love it. Newest Almost catalog looks sick.
2. Mike Mo Capaldi (3094) Mike Mo went pro last month in the same fell swoop at Girl that brought Alex Olson and Shaun Malto above deck.
3. Chris Cole (1820) Tricky equation: This 2005 Thrasher SOTY is as core as they come, but keeps winning at X Games, too. Candle at both ends.
4. David Gonzalez (1792) More high profile debut pro news, this time from Flip, Volcom, Globe, etc.
5. Corey Duffel (1735) Duffel did a dirty south tour with Foundation in June and must have made some impressions, as is his way.
6. Evan Smith (1684) Damn Am win in Minneapolis put this FL skater on the charts. The SPoT guys heckled him at Tampa Am. it worked.
7. Cody Davis (1642) More Damn Am news: This kid won qualifiers, then took 4th in Finals (and 6th in Bowl Jam!). Coming up fast. Pay attention.
8. Ryan Sheckler (1584) The real news here is that he's all the way down at #8. No season 3 on MTV? Should jump up again next month: Dew Tour.
9. Paul Rodriguez (1495) See above, but watch for both of these Plan B guys to move up the list next month: They're doin' the Dew, 1,2 style.
10. Riley Hawk (1481) Not just trading on the family name, though that helps: Tony Jr. is making his own way now, and it's fun to see.
11. Rob Dyrdek (1430) The Rob & Big star is also in the news this month promoting the Maloof Money Cup; he helped w/ Maloof skate plaza course.
12. Sean Malto (1413) See #2: Girl ran its whole am squad up the pro flagpole last month, and for very good reason.
13. David Loy (1366) 2006 Free Flow Tour champ makes good. Get out there and get some, kids: BNQT is an official FFT partner.
14. Lacey Baker (1296) I was only going to break down the top 10, but so stoked to see Lacey Baker on the list I went to 15 instead. Girl power!
15. Tosh Townend (1288) Tosh is on tour with the Indy 30th anniversary crew. Also made news in June for parting ways with Element. Interesting...
