In addition to running most of the best contests going – at their own skatepark and around the world – the good people at Skatepark of Tampa also maintain an exhaustive database of pro and amateur skaters, complete with photo and video, contest results, links to recent coverage for each athlete, and comment boards where you can talk trash, as is the way in Tampa and on the web. Anyway, if you're into numbers games, SPoT's Rob Meronek occasionally posts some fascinating SPoT traffic reports: Click over now to check out his list of the Top 500 Most Clicked On Skaters in the Last 90 Days.
Nobody will be surprised to see that Ryan Sheckler holds the top spot, with 16,672 clicks. Hell, just mentioning him by name in this blog guarantees me some extra traffic today. But there are some interesting trends elsewhere on the list, starting at #2, where Rodney Mullen is holding it down with 14,105 cllcks: The Mutt's still got it. Paul Rodriguez Jr., Mike Mo Capaldi, Chris Cole, Nyjah Huston, Rob Dyrdek, David Gonzales, Riley Hawk, and 2008 Tampa Am champ Ryan Decenzo round out the top 10.
Elsewhere on the list: Shane Sheckler makes it pretty high on the list (#16) on the strength of a 20th place finish at a Damn Am event last year, his last name, and some show that's apparently on TV, while biggies like Eric Koston and 2008 Tampa Pro champ Greg Lutzka are toiling down at #20 and #21, respectively. A handful of young ladies crack the list to prove I'm not the only one who loves women's skateboarding, including Lacey Baker at #32, Elissa Steamer at #82, Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins at #119, Lorena Lima at #225, Evelien Bouillart at #274, Vanessa Torres at #377, Amy Caron at #402, and Lauren Perkins at #406.
The world works in mysterious ways: Thrasher's 2007 Skater of the Year Marc Johnson only registers at #112 on the SPoT popularity meter; Tony Hawk clocks in way down at #183; Shaun White barely cracks the list at #436. Shane Cross (#22) and Harold Hunter (#250) refuse to rest in peace on the SPoT popularity meter. And I don't see my man Ben Hatchell anywhere on the list at all. Come on people! He took 2nd place at Tampa Am in January and won the Tampa Am vert contest last week! Show the guy some love! I'm officially campaigning to get Ben Hatchell on the list next time.
If I had to hazard a few predictions... Look for Ryan Decenzo (#10) to move up the list as the Damn Am, Free Flow Tour, and other events get under way and he continues to ride the Tampa Am win to more magazine coverage. Ditto for some of the groms we've been tracking for the last year on the BNQT whippersnapper watch, including David Gonzalez (currently at #8), Chaz Ortiz (#35), Louie Lopez (#44), and Morgan Burgess (#423).
In other SPoT popularity contest news, this photo of Jessica's ass was the most clicked photo on the site this month, out of all the contest and pro party coverage. Way to go, Jessica's ass! Click here for more of the Top 50 Most Clicked On Photos From the Tampa Pro Weekend, chock full of nudie shots, lapdance photos, muffin tops, fine foot fetish photography, and a couple of actual skateboarding shots. Gotta love the Internet!
And speaking of popularity contests: My blog registered more than 10,000 hits in March! Thanks! Keep it coming.
