I grew up in Colorado and in a high school I dated a girl who lived at the top of Lookout Mountain, a famed makeout spot overlooking the city with a wicked-steep, curvy road off of it that is sketchy even to drive down. I mention this because over the weekend the Buffalo Bill Downhill was held there, a special brand of Colorado-crazy that attracted skateboarders from all over the place.
The event was billed as Colorado's first-ever sanctioned downhill race, and police shut down the road for the day for everybody's safety. The course was a mile-long stretch of dead-man's curves down the road, which runs from Buffalo Bill's gravesite into Golden, CO.
Downhill skateboarding doesn't get a lot of coverage these days, and got dropped from the X Games a while back, but I love bombing a good hill as much as anybody else, so every once in a while when these guys do something insane, I like to give them due props for it. Downhill racing on Lookout Mountain has to qualify as one of the craziest things in skateboarding circa 2009. Congrats on pulling it off, guys!
The Denver Post has a nice writeup with a classic picture of Paxton Burton midway on his way to eating asphalt, and the local CBS affiliate had a story on the news.
Colorado skaters dominated the Finals:
1st Place- Zak Maytum, Colorado
2nd Place- Louis Pilloni, California
3rd Place- Will Brunson, New Mexico
4th Place- Brian Elderkin, Canada
5th Place- Calvin Staub, Colorado
6th Place- Brian Holden, Colorado
